How We Research & Test

This page explains exactly how our guides are put together, so you can judge how much weight to give them.

1. We start with the space, not the product

Each guide begins with the situation: a 6-inch gap beside a washer, a vanity with a P-trap in the middle, a shower with no drilling allowed. We define the measurements that decide fit — width, depth, height clearance, pipe position, load rating, surface type — before we look at any product.

2. We compare published specifications

For each product type we collect the manufacturer’s listed dimensions, materials, weight limits and installation requirements, and compare them side by side against the measurements above. Where listings disagree with each other or with the manufacturer, we note it and prefer the manufacturer’s spec sheet.

3. We flag renter and safety limits

We call out anything that needs drilling, adhesives that may damage paint or sealant, anti-tip requirements for tall units, and moisture limits in bathrooms. Safety and tenancy constraints rank above convenience.

4. We are explicit about testing

Each guide states one of the following near the top:

  • Spec-based research — based on published specifications, measurements and analysis. We have not physically used the products listed.
  • Hands-on — we have used the product in a real space. We say what we measured and for how long, and we show our own photos.

We never describe a product as tested if it was not.

5. We list drawbacks

Every recommendation includes who it is not for and what can go wrong. If a product type only works in a narrow set of situations, we say so.

6. We keep guides current

Guides show the date they were last updated. We review commercial guides at least every six months and whenever a reader reports a problem.

What we don’t do

  • We don’t publish star ratings or review text copied from retailers.
  • We don’t publish fixed prices — they change too often. Check the retailer for the current price.
  • We don’t accept payment for placement.
