The cabinet under a bathroom sink (a vanity unit in the UK) is one of the most wasted storage spaces in a small home, because the waste pipe and P-trap run straight through the middle. The right under-sink organizer works around the plumbing instead of fighting it. This guide shows you how to measure, which organizer types suit which pipe layouts, and what to avoid.

Quick answer

  • Pipe in the centre (most common): a U-shaped or adjustable-width two-tier shelf that straddles the trap, or two narrow units either side.
  • Pipe at the back: pull-out drawers or sliding baskets in front of it.
  • Pipe off to one side: one wide unit on the open side, a narrow cart or bins on the other.
  • Very shallow cabinet: door-mounted racks and slim stackable bins.

Step 1: Measure the cabinet and map the pipes

  1. Interior width between the side walls — and the width of the door opening, which is often narrower because of the face frame or hinges. Organizers have to fit through the opening.
  2. Interior depth from the back wall to the inside of the door.
  3. Interior height from the cabinet floor to the underside of the sink bowl or countertop.
  4. Pipe map: measure from the left wall to the left edge of the trap, the width of the trap, and from the floor to the lowest point of the pipe. Note the supply valves and hoses too.

Sketch it on paper with the numbers. That sketch is your buying spec.

Comparison: organizer types

Type Works with Adjustability Access Watch out
U-shaped / adjustable two-tier shelf Centre pipe Width and sometimes height Good Check the gap in the middle fits your trap
Two narrow units either side Centre pipe Flexible placement Good Each side must fit through the door opening
Pull-out sliding drawers Pipe at the back or side Low Excellent Need full depth in front of the pipe; check runner length
Stackable clear bins Any layout High Fair Can become a jumble without labels
Door-mounted rack Any layout Low Good Must clear the pipes and shelf when the door shuts
Turntable (lazy Susan) Corners, side spaces None Good Wastes corners in square cabinets

The specs that matter

Clearance in the middle

For U-shaped units, compare the open gap with your trap width plus a little room for hand access. Adjustable-width models can be set to your pipe position.

Height of each tier

Measure your tallest bottles (cleaning sprays, refills). Two-tier units under a low sink can leave very little room on the top tier.

Moisture resistance

Leaks happen under sinks. Choose plastic or coated metal, and consider a waterproof cabinet liner or drip tray underneath — it catches slow leaks and makes them easier to spot.

Pull-out runners

For drawers, check the runner type and listed load. Full-extension runners let you reach the back; cheaper slides may only open part-way.

Assembly through the opening

Many organizers arrive flat and are assembled inside the cabinet. If yours comes pre-assembled, its overall width must fit through the door opening.

Picks by situation

Centre trap, standard vanity: adjustable two-tier U-shaped shelf

Why it fits: uses both sides of the pipe and the space above the trap.
Watch out: top tier height is limited by the sink bowl.

Pipe at the back: two pull-out drawers

Why it fits: everything slides out — no kneeling and reaching.
Watch out: needs enough depth in front of the pipe for the drawer runners.

Tiny or shallow cabinet: door rack + clear bins

Why it fits: uses the door and stacks vertically.
Watch out: door racks must clear the trap when the door closes.

Renters

All freestanding under-sink organizers are renter-friendly. For door racks, choose over-the-door hooks or adhesive mounts only if you’re allowed — and test the adhesive on a hidden area first.

What not to store under the sink

  • Medicines — humidity can affect them; a cool, dry cupboard is better.
  • Anything that can’t get wet, unless it’s in a sealed container.
  • Cleaning chemicals within reach of children — use a child-safety latch if needed.
  • Bleach next to ammonia-based cleaners — keep incompatible chemicals apart.

FAQ

How do I measure for an under-sink organizer with pipes?

Measure the door opening, interior width, depth and height, then the position and width of the trap from the left wall and its height from the floor. See our step-by-step section above.

Will pull-out drawers fit under a bathroom sink?

Often, if the pipe sits at the back. Check that the drawer depth plus runner length fits in front of the pipe.

What’s the difference between a vanity and a cabinet?

In US usage, the vanity is the sink-plus-cabinet unit; in the UK it’s often called a vanity unit or basin cabinet.
