Hooks are the simplest storage there is — until one falls off the wall with your coat on it, or pulls paint off when you move out. “No-drill” hooks work by adhesive, suction, magnets or by hanging over something. Each has a surface it loves and surfaces it hates.

How to install adhesive hooks properly

  1. Clean the surface with rubbing alcohol (not household cleaners, which can leave residue) and let it dry.
  2. Avoid textured paint, wallpaper, brick and freshly painted walls (manufacturers often say to wait several days after painting).
  3. Press firmly for the time stated, then wait the curing time before loading.
  4. Stay under the rated load — and remember coats and bags get heavier when you hang more on them.

Removing without damage

Follow the manufacturer’s method — usually stretching the tab slowly straight down along the wall, not pulling outward. Pulling outward is what tears paint.

Where each type works best

  • Entry: over-door hooks for coats; adhesive hooks for keys.
  • Kitchen: adhesive hooks inside cabinet doors for cloths and measuring spoons.
  • Bathroom: suction or bathroom-rated adhesive hooks for loofahs and razors — not heavy towels.
  • Laundry: magnetic hooks on the side of steel machines.

FAQ

Can adhesive hooks hold a coat?

Some larger strips are rated for several pounds, but winter coats and bags add up. Over-door hooks are more reliable for heavy items.

Why did my hook fall off?

Usually the surface (textured, dusty, humid) or loading it before the adhesive cured.
