Spec-based guide. Based on typical listed hamper dimensions and materials, and our own analysis — we have not physically tested the hampers described. How we research.

In a small home the hamper usually ends up wherever there’s a spare strip of floor: behind a bathroom door, in the corner of a closet, beside a dresser. A slim hamper (a slim laundry basket in the UK) trades floor area for height, so it fits narrow spots without giving up much capacity. Here’s how to choose one that fits the space and doesn’t smell.

Quick answer

  • Behind a door or beside a toilet: a tall rectangular hamper with a footprint around 10–14 in wide (25–35 cm) and a lid.
  • In a closet: a lidless tall hamper or a hanging hamper bag on the rail — easier to drop clothes in.
  • If you sort lights and darks: a slim two-compartment sorter rather than two separate hampers.
  • If you carry laundry to a shared machine: a hamper with a removable liner bag with handles, or one on wheels.

Step 1: Measure the spot

  1. Width and depth of the floor area, allowing for skirting boards and door frames.
  2. Door swing. If it goes behind a door, measure the gap between the open door and the wall.
  3. Height clearance under a towel rail, shelf or window sill — a lid needs room to open.
  4. Walkway. In a bathroom, leave enough clear floor to move comfortably around the toilet and basin.

Comparison: hamper types

Type Typical footprint Lid Best for Trade-off
Tall rectangular (fabric or woven) 10–14 in × 12–16 in Usually Bathrooms, behind doors Tall shapes can be harder to empty
Slim two-compartment sorter 10–14 in × 18–24 in Sometimes Sorting lights/darks in one footprint Each section is small
Corner (triangular) Fits a 90° corner Often Awkward bathroom corners Less capacity than its height suggests
Hanging hamper bag Zero floor space No Closets with a rail, over-door hooks Limited load; check hook strength
Rolling hamper / cart 12–16 in × 16–24 in Varies Carrying to a laundry room Wheels need hard floors

The specs that matter

Footprint vs capacity

Capacity is often listed in litres or gallons. A rough, practical guide: one adult’s week of clothes fits in a hamper of around 50–60 litres; a full washer load is often more. A slim hamper may need emptying more often — decide whether that’s acceptable before you buy.

Airflow

Damp towels in a closed, airtight hamper can develop smells and mildew. Woven, mesh or ventilated designs breathe better. In a bathroom, let damp towels dry before they go in.

Removable liner

A removable, washable liner bag (ideally with handles) makes carrying laundry easier and keeps the hamper clean. Check whether the liner is machine washable.

Lid

Lids hide laundry and keep pets out, but you’ll need clearance to open them. Flip-up and split lids need less space than lift-off lids.

Stability

Tall, narrow fabric hampers can sag or tip when half-full. Look for rigid frames, wider bases, or bamboo/metal supports.

Material

  • Fabric on a frame: light and foldable; may sag over time.
  • Woven (rattan, water hyacinth, plastic weave): breathable and sturdy; natural fibres don’t love constant humidity.
  • Plastic: easy to wipe and moisture-resistant; check ventilation holes.

Picks by situation

Small bathroom: tall lidded hamper with ventilation

Why it fits: carry or roll laundry without a separate basket.
Watch out: carrying a full liner up stairs can be heavy — choose one with reinforced handles.

Renters: anything freestanding

All freestanding hampers are renter-friendly. Over-door hanging options are too, if the hook doesn’t stop the door closing.

Most slim designs are roughly 10–14 inches (25–35 cm) wide, with height making up the capacity.

Yes, if it’s ventilated and you don’t put soaking-wet items in it. Empty it regularly.

Lid or no lid?

Lid for bathrooms and shared spaces; no lid for closets where speed matters.
