A tiny laundry room — or utility room — works when the steps of doing laundry follow each other without backtracking: sort, wash, dry, fold, put away. Plan the room around that flow, then add storage.

Step 1: Map the workflow

Stage Needs Small-space solution
Sort Somewhere to drop dirty laundry Slim sorter or hamper by the door
Wash Detergent within reach Shelf above or cart beside the washer
Dry Dryer clearance or drying space Fold-down rack or folding airer
Fold A flat surface Counter over front-loaders, or a fold-down shelf
Put away Hangers and baskets Tension rod or over-door hooks

Step 2: Respect appliance clearances

  • Follow the clearance figures in each appliance’s installation manual.
  • Keep the dryer vent short, straight and uncrushed.
  • Keep water shut-off valves reachable.
  • Front-loader doors need swing room; top-loaders need lid height.

Step 3: Create a folding surface

With side-by-side front-loaders, a counter or board across the top creates a folding table — leave space for vibration and follow the manufacturer’s guidance. Otherwise, a wall-mounted fold-down shelf or a folding table stored in a gap works.

Step 4: Add storage in order

  1. Above the machines — see over-washer shelves.
  2. The gap beside the machines — a narrow rolling cart.
  3. The door — hooks for the ironing board and bags.

Step 5: Light and air

Good lighting helps you spot stains; ventilation stops damp smells. A battery LED light bar is a renter-friendly upgrade.

FAQ

Should I stack my washer and dryer?

Stacking frees floor space if your models support it — only use the manufacturer’s approved stacking kit.
